Biography
Cédric Tiberghien was born on 5 May 1975 and started playing the piano at the age of five. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de la Musique in Paris with Frédéric Aguessy and Gérard Fremy and was awarded the Premier Prix in 1992. After a further period of study he won several major awards at international competitions: Bremen (2nd prize 1993 – no 1st prize awarded), Dublin (2nd prize 1994), Tel Aviv (Rubinstein Competition 6th prize 1995), Geneva (3rd prize 1996 – no 1st prize awarded), Milan (U. Micheli, semi finalist 1997). In December 1998 he was awarded 1er Grand Prix at the Long-Thibaud Competition in Paris, along with 5 special prizes including the Public Prize and the Orchestra Prize.
Since then his career has gone from strength to strength, and he has appeared as in solo recitals, with orchestra and in chamber music, both in France (Salle Pleyel, Théâtre du Chatelet, Theatre des Champs Elysées, Corum at Montpelier, Salle Ravel in Lyon…) and internationally (Vienna Musikverein, Amstrerdam Concertgebouw, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Wigmore Hall in London, USA, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Canada, Poland, Switzerland, China, Mexico, Columbia…). He has also taken part in many international festivals (La Roque d’Anthéron, Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse, Piano en Valois, Klavier Festival Ruhr, Yokohama Festival…).
Cedric Tiberghien’s regular musical partners include Valérie Aimard, Pierre Amoyal, Marie Hallynck, Sébastien van Kuijk, the Ysaÿe Quartet, the Diotima Quartet, The Psophos Quartet, Alain Planès, Marie Devellereau and Gweneth Ann-Jeffers.
He made his Carnegie Hall debut in New York in November 2000. In March 2002 he toured Japan with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France under Myung-Whun Chung to huge acclaim, and in the same month he was soloist in the world premiere of Ivan Fedele’s Concerto for 2 Pianos and Orchestra with the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Christoph Eschenbach.
With more than 40 concertos in his repertoire he has made frequent appearances with a large number of prestigious international orchestras including the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, Orchestre de Paris, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Orchestre National d’Ile de France, Orchestre National de Lille, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Israël Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestra Philarmonia di Roma, Tokyo Philarmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre National de Montpellier, Orchestre de Picardie... Conductors with whom he has worked include Jean-Claude Casadesus, Myung-Whun Chung, Edmon Colomer, Christoph Eschenbach, Ivan Fischer, Louis Langrée, Friedemann Layer, Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Jacques Mercier, John Nelson, Michel Plasson, Yutaka Sado, Stefan Sanderling, Jerzy Semkow ... He has undertaken many radio recordings in France, Germany, Poland and Moscow. He has also recorded several CDs: the first devoted entirely to the music of Debussy, and another of sonatas with Marie Hallynck, both on the Harmonia Mundi label, two CDs of chamber music for the Lyrinx label with Amanda Favier and Valerie Aimard (the latter highly praised by the music press). He has also made a CD of music for 2 pianos with Frédéric Aguessy. In February 2003 he released a much lauded new CD of Beethoven Piano Variations with Harmonia Mundi. His latest release on the Lyrinx label is of music by Ravel and Fauré with the violinist Vadim Tchijik.
During 2005 Cédric Tiberghien is performing as a soloist, in concerto appearances and in chamber music in Paris (Bouffes du Nord, Théâtre de la Ville), London (Wigmore Hall, Covent Garden, City of London Festival) Prague, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Columbia, Costa Rica, Holland, Luxemburg, Switzerland. He will also undertake a tour of Mexico.
Cédric Tiberghien has recently been invited to join the BBC’s prestigious New Generation Artists Scheme in London, joining a select group of 12 international young artists specially selected for the scheme. During his 2 years on the scheme, from 2005 – 2007, he will make many studio recordings, both as a soloist and chamber musician, give recitals in several of the UK’s leading concert halls (including Wigmore Hall in London and Bridgewater Hall in Manchester) and make concerto appearances with the BBC Orchestras. All these activities will be relayed on BBC Radio 3.
