He has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation. Among the numerous orchestras with which he has performed number the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de France, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, the Opera orchestras of Paris and Lyon and the Orchestre de la Monnaie de Bruxelles. The pianist soloist of the Ensemble Intercontemporain at Pierre Boulez’s request, he has become very much in demand of the leading festivals and concert venues such as Scala (Milan), Montreux, Marlboro. First known as a recording artist for his Janáček and Chabrier, Alain Planès has since recorded for Harmonia Mundi all of the Schubert Sonatas which, like his recordings of the Chopin and Debussy Preludes, was hailed by the critics internationally.
